I only started using palette knives a few months ago in my oil classes. They’re so much fun to use. So expressive. When I got my first commission, I jumped at the chance to put them to good use! http://artfn.wordpress.com/2013/12/26/first-commission/
I can’t tell if it’s a sun or a giant sunflower. For some reason I like the sunflower idea better. It makes me feel that happiness can be that big! Sunflowers are my favorite!! Nice painting & congrats on the commission!
You were close with a giant sunflower! The background in my painting is an exaggeration of the tree-covered hill that backs the buildings in Tobermory. So although the yellow area isn’t a giant sunflower, it might as well have been as it represents lots of tree leaves 🙂
I wanted to mention, but forgot, sunflowers always remind me of travelling down to Spain through France by car when I was a kid. I remember passing field after field of sunflowers – probably grown for sunflower oil. Nice memories to have of a special plant. I like how they so obviously follow the movement of the sun.

Since you like sunflowers, here is one I posted a year ago tomorrow: http://artfn.wordpress.com/2013/03/23/drawing-lesson-8/

yeah, they are great! I don’t paint sunflowers, but I do like to photograph them! Here’s one (maybe you’ve seen it already) https://gabrielalebaron.wordpress.com/2013/08/31/two-of-my-favorite-things/
